erlind led us through the most abandoned route out of the palace, while I introduced her to my sisters. She was very excited to meet them, and told them they were lucky to have a sister who would protect them so well. I couldn’t help feeling humbled as they all agreed. When we reached the gates, she bid us farewell and promised me she would find Malachi’s brothers, so she could visit.
We began our precarious journey through the city back to our sector. Evening had fallen, and the sun had set, leaving only a dim light. The streets looked nearly abandoned; we kept quiet and slipped by in the shadows, unnoticed.
Once we passed into our sector of the city, we all paused and took a deep sigh of relief, before we walked slowly toward our homes together. Rena linked her arm through mine and rested her head on my shoulder, while Eliora grabbed my hand and wove her fingers into mine. They did all they could to help comfort me, and I felt exceedingly grateful, but my heart still felt heavy.
My little boy was gone. He had grown up too quickly, and now I felt like he was being dangled above a pit of hungry crocodiles, and if he didn’t hold on, he would be eaten alive. I prayed and hoped Horemheb would keep a tight grip on him and watch him closely. Horemheb was my only hope.
Adina sighed and I glanced across at her. She looked troubled, with her eyebrows furrowed and her arms folded.
“Adina?” I said gently.
Her gaze shot up to me, surprised. “Yes?”
“What’s troubling you?”
She sighed again and looked away from me. “What happened between you and the Commander in Amarna, Naomi? The Egyptians all hinted at something, and Malachi is always so touchy about it, but you never talk much of your experiences there.”
She pulled her arms tighter around her and huffed. “I feel like there’s this great piece of time which has never been explained, and I want to understand. I spent those three years praying for you every day and worrying about you every moment. Then you came back to us and it was wonderful, but when I see you with the Egyptians and hear the way they talk about who you were, I feel like I just don’t know you at all.”
Eliora’s hand tightened around mine, while Rena pressed closer to me. I knew they thought the same thing, but were too afraid to say anything. After all, I had stepped in for them, so they didn’t want to appear ungrateful.
“So you want to know who the greatly beloved Queen Kiya was?” I asked Adina gently.
“I do,” she replied. “And I want to know why there is such scandal associated with you and the Commander.”
I sighed and changed direction. My sisters seemed surprised, but followed without question. I led them down to an abandoned irrigation pump by the river, where we wouldn’t be heard. By then, darkness had fallen, and the stars and half-moon lit the sky.
